Critical Care Nursing Books

Critical & Intensive Care - People with life-threatening injuries and illnesses need critical care. Critical care involves close, constant attention by a team of specially-trained health professionals. It usually takes place in an intensive care unit (ICU) or trauma center. The Nurse patient ratio is lower in this setting.

The ICU Book, 3rd Edition
by Paul L. Marino
Amazon Price: $75.74
Customer Review: I read this book prior to starting my sub-I in the MICU. This is a one-of-a-kind book that combines basic physiology behind clinical decision making with the day-to-day practices at the bedside. The chapters are concise and to the point, making the book an easy read for all of us with little time (and patience). I kept it in the workroom and referred to it every day, and I know that I will be using it soon for my ICU months as a resident. Read it, use it, and benefit. I wish there is an equivalent book for the floor.

Tarascon Internal Medicine & Critical Care Pocketbook (Whinshall, Tarascon In...
by James S. Winshall M.D., Robert J. Lederman M.D.

Customer Review: A very useful, handy and to-the-point pocket reference with truly useful stuff!
All of our internal med. residents got one!

Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures
Amazon Price: $149.06
Customer Review: I was very disappointed with this book. I was hoping for a text in which I could look up cases I wasn't already familiar with (I am in 4th year of Residency in Canada), but I found that every time I wasn't familiar with a case, neither was this book; i.e. it didn't have ANY listing of the procedure at all. This kept happening repeatedly, and now I rarely bother to open it. If you are a beginning resident who doesn't know how to do anesthesia for a lap chole, this book would be great. But for Anesthesiologists and senior residents looking for a more encyclopedic reference for outlining not-so-common surgeries, save your money (it's not cheap) and look elsewhere.

As a good poi...

Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Massachusetts General Hospital: Departm...
Amazon Price: $44.95
Customer Review: Very helpful to get help for those cases you don't see often in the OR setting. I would recommend this book to residents as well as to senior anesthesiologists.

ECG Workout: Exercises in Arrhythmia Interpretation (Huff, ECG Workout)
by Jane Huff
Amazon Price: $36.63
Customer Review: I bought this to help some medical students who were struggling with ECG basics. I feel like it may be a bit too detailed in some of the interpretations, but overall, I was very impressed with the quality and variety of the strips. My students all passed their ECG exam.

Pass CCRN®!
by Robin Donohoe Dennison DNP RN CCNS
Amazon Price: $57.29
Customer Review: This is the best book you can buy to pass CCRN exam.As others say it is vast. But you can study from the basics which help you to understand the pathophysiology well. The questions CD comes with the book is enough for you to practice the questions. The questions in the CCRN exam is almost like that in the CD.I did questions from AACN CERTIFICATION AND CORE REVIEW FOR HIGH ACUITY AND CRITICAL CARE of Alspach and CRITICAL CARE EXAMINATION REVIEW of Gasparis.AACN book has very hard questions which brought down my confidence to zero.CCRN exam is much easier than that questions.Gasparis questions is somewhat ok.But in my opinion we need only PASS CCRN and its CD.I passed the exam with 83% marks.Good...

The Little ICU Book of Facts and Formulas
by Paul L Marino
Amazon Price: $35.96
Customer Review: Great simple to understand guide for residents! Definitely not comprehensive, but it gets me by in the majority of situations.

Critical Care Nursing Certification: Preparation, Review, and Practice Exams,...
by Thomas Ahrens, Donna Prentics, Ruth Kleinpell
Amazon Price: $50.23
Customer Review: I just passed the CCRN exam, and of all the reference material I used to study with, this book (the 5th edition) was the best. It has enough content to comprehend the subjects that are tested, but not too detailed to be confusing or overwhelming. This should be your priority book for studying. There are a lot of practice questions that test your knowledge. They are more straight forward than the actual CCRN questions (which seem like advanced NCLEX type questions).
The 5th edition book will be a permanent book in my library and for review (or until I'm not cheap enough to buy this or future editions).
